{"id":887,"date":"2015-01-04T20:49:26","date_gmt":"2015-01-04T20:49:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/?p=887"},"modified":"2015-01-04T20:51:57","modified_gmt":"2015-01-04T20:51:57","slug":"winter-light-photography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/winter-light-photography\/","title":{"rendered":"Winter Light (photography)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The grey season.\u00a0 In the northeast, wintertime without snow is a drag, particularly for outdoor photographers.\u00a0 I need some snow here.\u00a0 Not just on the ground \u2013 we need snow sticking to tree branches.<\/p>\n<p>This winter has brought a fair amount of precipitation, but it\u2019s been rain rather than snow.\u00a0 What little snow we\u2019ve seen has quickly washed away as snow turned into rain. It is pretty \u2013 I hope that much is obvious. However, the light may not be obvious. The orientation of the mill and surrounding trees doesn\u2019t catch much direct sunlight. The sun is setting on the other side of those trees. The light is what it is and there\u2019s no changing it.<\/p>\n<p>In photography, we have to be aware of the orientation of the subject with regard to the light.\u00a0\u00a0 When the light on the subject is not what we would prefer, you can sometimes move the subject, but not if the subject is a building.\u00a0 You can sometimes move the light, but not if the light happens to be the sun.\u00a0 You might come back at a different time of day, when the sun is in a different position.\u00a0 However, I believe this mill is in shadow of the trees both morning and evening.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_889\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-889\" style=\"width: 340px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/KD14_4791.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-889\" alt=\"Church at sunset\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/KD14_4791-340x226.jpg\" width=\"340\" height=\"226\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/KD14_4791-340x226.jpg 340w, https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/KD14_4791.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 340px) 100vw, 340px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-889\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Church at sunset<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sometimes, in outdoor photography, using only available light, there\u2019s nothing you can do to change the light on the subject. But you might find a different subject to photograph. Across the street, a church was catching the light of the setting sun. So, I photographed the church. And next to the church is a historic one-room schoolhouse.
