{"id":691,"date":"2013-07-25T17:31:05","date_gmt":"2013-07-25T17:31:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/?p=691"},"modified":"2013-08-14T00:41:39","modified_gmt":"2013-08-14T00:41:39","slug":"wildlife-photography-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wildlife-photography-workshop\/","title":{"rendered":"Wildlife Photography Workshop"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When I heard about this photography opportunity, I could not ignore it.\u00a0 Everyone loves baby animals!\u00a0 A 3-day workshop with leader Jeff Wendorff, to photograph baby animals at a game ranch in Montana.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=694\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-694\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-694\" alt=\"Red Fox cubs\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DDD13-5891-1024x682.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DDD13-5891-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DDD13-5891-340x226.jpg 340w, https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DDD13-5891.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>Wolf cubs, Red Fox cubs, Bobcat kits, a 4-month-old Tiger, and more.\u00a0 The cuteness factor is very high.<\/p>\n<p>I discovered limitations of my camera equipment that I had known before; particularly, my ability to quickly select a focus point.\u00a0 In this regard, I have never considered the Canon 5D2 to be cumbersome, but I found here that the controls are not quite agile enough.\u00a0\u00a0 The common technique of focus, then recompose, takes 2 seconds and that\u2019s not fast enough.\u00a0 The wolf cubs were particularly difficult; they are very energetic and very fast.<\/p>\n<p>All totaled, I shot somewhere around 3400 photos. \u00a0By comparison to some other folks, that\u2019s not a lot.<\/p>\n<p>After editing, I had fewer than 1000 images.\u00a0 (I should probably do another round of editing and cut that number in half.) \u00a0Images were rejected for a variety of reasons.\u00a0 Maybe my composition cut off the tip of a tail.\u00a0 Maybe the animal\u2019s ears were pointing in an odd way.\u00a0 Sometimes there is nothing particularly wrong with the image, but I have a similar image that is slightly better.\u00a0 Delete the weaker image because there is no point in keeping both images.<\/p>\n<p>[ Click on either image to see a larger view. ]<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/?attachment_id=695\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-695\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-695\" alt=\"tiger reflection\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DDD13-6246-226x340.jpg\" width=\"226\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DDD13-6246-226x340.jpg 226w, https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DDD13-6246-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/DDD13-6246.jpg 733w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/><\/a>The workshop included a 4<sup>th<\/sup> day, just in case foul weather might interfere with the workshop, though this wasn\u2019t necessary the week we were there.\u00a0 So we had the option to photograph some other animals, including adult animals and a 1.5-year-old Grizzly Bear.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 3.5 days, two days are jam-packed busy.\u00a0 The other 1.5 days are still busy but not as exhausting.<\/p>\n<p>Not only is Jeff Wendorff (<a title=\"Jeff Wendorff\" href=\"http:\/\/jeffwendorff.com\">jeffwendorff.com<\/a>) an expert at photographing wildlife, but he also has an excellent relationship with the staff at the game ranch.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When I heard about this photography opportunity, I could not ignore it.\u00a0 Everyone loves baby animals!\u00a0 A 3-day workshop with leader Jeff Wendorff, to photograph baby animals at a game ranch in Montana.
