{"id":375,"date":"2012-04-26T02:46:31","date_gmt":"2012-04-26T02:46:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/?p=375"},"modified":"2012-10-25T12:52:24","modified_gmt":"2012-10-25T12:52:24","slug":"new-cameras-for-hd-2k-and-4k-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/new-cameras-for-hd-2k-and-4k-video\/","title":{"rendered":"New cameras for HD, 2K, and 4K video"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In 2008, Vince Laforet shocked the film-making world with a short film called &#8220;<em>Reverie<\/em>&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/7151244\">http:\/\/vimeo.com\/7151244<\/a>).\u00a0 He shot this in just two days using a borrowed\u00a0<strong>Canon EOS 5D mk II<\/strong> (borrowed from Canon) before the camera was released.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, the 5D mk II has become a serious tool for film-makers, particularly because it is much smaller than existing cameras (those specifically designed for cinematography) &#8230; and also because the cost is a small fraction of those cinematography cameras.<br \/>\nRecently, Canon announced a successor for 2012, the <strong>EOS 5D mk III<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The overwhelming success of the 5D mk II for video purposes was somewhat surprising to everyone, including Canon and Nikon.\u00a0 Just a couple months prior to introduction of the 5Dm2, Nikon had introduced\u00a0the first\u00a0DSLR that supported 720 HD (not 1080).\u00a0\u00a0 By most accounts, Nikon\u00a0trailed behind the success of the 5D2, but successfully &#8220;caught up&#8221; with cameras such as the <strong>D7000<\/strong>, \u00a0<strong>D4<\/strong>, and <strong>D800<\/strong>, all of which offer excellent 1080 HD video capture.\u00a0 By some measures, the D800 trumps the Canon 5D mk III.<\/p>\n<p>All these cameras are built around CMOS image sensors that are far larger than what you find inside video camcorders.\u00a0 When combined with a system of\u00a0interchangable lenses, film-makers\u00a0can\u00a0create effects and quality not possible with consumer or prosumer video camcorders.<\/p>\n<p>Since the success of the 5D mk II, Canon has been on a mission to create new cameras specifically for cinematography (movies &amp; television).\u00a0 Enter &#8230; the new <strong>EOS C300<\/strong>, <strong>EOS C500<\/strong>, and <strong>EOS 1D C\u00a0<\/strong> (&#8220;c&#8221; is for cinema).\u00a0 Both the C500 and EOS 1D C can capture at digital resolutions higher than 1080 HD.\u00a0 While the EOS 1D C is an SLR that can shoot still images and video, the C300 and C500 are pure video machines that will capture 12-bit 4:4:4 color, compared to 8-bit 4:2.2 color in any DSLR.<\/p>\n<p>While the\u00a0<strong>EOS 1D C<\/strong> is the same size as the EOS 1D and 1Dx, it can capture 4K video at 24 fps or 1080 video at 60 fps.\u00a0 That&#8217;s\u00a0a data output somewhere around 500 Megabytes\/sec.\u00a0<br \/>\nCanon recruited film-maker Shane Hurlbut to test out the new camera.\u00a0 He created a short film, entitled &#8220;<em>The Ticket<\/em>&#8220;.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hurlbutvisuals.com\/blog\/2012\/04\/looking-inside-the-canon1dc-dslr-4k-capture-project-the-ticket\/\">http:\/\/www.hurlbutvisuals.com\/blog\/2012\/04\/looking-inside-the-canon1dc-dslr-4k-capture-project-the-ticket\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Canon&#8217;s new cinematography play is priced well for serious indie film-makers, but not for consumers.\u00a0 So, another interesting camera for 2012, is the new <strong>Blackmagic Cinema Camera<\/strong>, which shoots 2.5K video and costs less than $3K.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>720 HD<\/strong>\u00a0 = 1280 x 720\u00a0 (16:9)<br \/>\n<strong>1080 HD<\/strong> = 1920 x 1080 (16:9)\u00a0 Panavision Genesis, Sony CineAlta, Canon C300<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and DSLRs: Canon 5D mk II, Canon 5D mk III, Canon 1Dx,\u00a0<br \/>\n\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Nikon D7000, Nikon D800, Nikon D4<\/p>\n<p><strong>2K<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 = 2048 x 1080 (17:9)\u00a0\u00a0 Ari Alexa, Silicon Imaging SI-2K, Canon C500<br \/>\n<strong>2.5K<\/strong> = 2432 x 1366 (16:9)\u00a0\u00a0 Blackmagic Cinema camera<br \/>\n<strong>4K<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0 = 4096 \u00d7 2160 (17:9)\u00a0\u00a0 RED One, Red Scarlet, Canon C500, Canon 1D C<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 2008, Vince Laforet shocked the film-making world with a short film called &#8220;Reverie&#8221; (http:\/\/vimeo.com\/7151244).\u00a0 He shot this in just two days using a borrowed\u00a0Canon EOS 5D mk II (borrowed from Canon) before the camera was released.
