{"id":334,"date":"2012-03-19T12:11:18","date_gmt":"2012-03-19T12:11:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/?p=334"},"modified":"2012-10-25T12:52:25","modified_gmt":"2012-10-25T12:52:25","slug":"deeper-into-custom-books","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/deeper-into-custom-books\/","title":{"rendered":"Deeper Into Custom Books"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Typically, to create a print-on-demand custom photo-book, you download easy-to-use free software from the vendor\/printer, layout your book pages, then upload the result for printing.\u00a0 But, alternatively, some vendors allow you to use other page-layout software.\u00a0 For my latest book, I used Adobe InDesign.<\/p>\n<p>Having used the free software from three different vendors, I found them all quite similar and mostly intuitive to learn.\u00a0 On the other hand, Adobe InDesign is just a bit more complicated to learn, but much more flexible.\u00a0 If you can imagine it, you can do it.\u00a0 For example, a frame can be virtually any shape at all (a frame is a container for text or images).\u00a0 I used this flexibility several times throughout my book.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_335\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-335\" style=\"width: 714px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/InDesign_example.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-335 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/InDesign_example.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"714\" height=\"492\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/InDesign_example.jpg 793w, https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/InDesign_example-300x206.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 714px) 100vw, 714px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-335\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adobe InDesign<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>There is one important difficulty to be aware of.\u00a0 The printing equipment used to print your book is almost certainly based upon CMYK inks, not RGB.\u00a0 All images must be converted to CMYK.\u00a0 When you use free software (downloaded from your PoD vendor), this conversion is done automatically for you.\u00a0 But when using other layout software, such as InDesign, you are responsible for doing conversion to CMYK.<\/p>\n<p>Converting images from RGB to CMYK can be ugly.\u00a0 The conversion will necessarily shift some colors.\u00a0 And because CMYK is a smaller color space than RGB, some colors simply cannot be represented in CMYK.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the case of my recent book, Wildflowers of RiverPark, I converted each image to CMYK using Adobe Photoshop.\u00a0 In general, rich green colors did not convert well to CMYK; no matter which conversion method I used, greens became horribly muted.\u00a0 With practice, I learned how to compensate for this.\u00a0 I was able to create a custom action to help this process, but it was still annoying and time consuming.\u00a0 Furthermore, one image in particular features vivid purple-magenta (flower is Deptford Pink) that could not be represented in CMYK.<\/p>\n<p>In doing the conversions myself, and using the soft-proof feature in Photoshop, I gained one important benefit.\u00a0 The colors in the printed book are very accurate.\u00a0 If you rely upon your PoD vendor to automatically convert your images, you may get some unexpected color shift in your final printed book.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically using InDesign provides another small benefit: InDesign works well with Adobe Bridge and Photoshop.\u00a0 From InDesign, create an emtpy frame, then hop over to Adobe Bridge, click on an image and choose: Place into InDesign.\u00a0 The image is inserted into the frame you created.\u00a0 After the image has been added to your book, making changes to the image is simple.\u00a0\u00a0Right click on the image and choose: &#8220;Edit Original&#8221; to edit the\u00a0image in Photoshop.\u00a0 When you save your Photoshop changes, InDesign automatically\u00a0picks up your changes and updates your InDesign document.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Typically, to create a print-on-demand custom photo-book, you download easy-to-use free software from the vendor\/printer, layout your book pages, then upload the result for printing.\u00a0 But, alternatively, some vendors allow you to use other page-layout software.\u00a0 For my latest book, I used Adobe InDesign.
