{"id":158,"date":"2011-06-24T02:55:32","date_gmt":"2011-06-24T02:55:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/?p=158"},"modified":"2018-04-06T16:06:08","modified_gmt":"2018-04-06T16:06:08","slug":"equine-photography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/equine-photography\/","title":{"rendered":"Equine photography"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A fun and\u00a0eye-opening day today photographing horses with Lisa Cueman and David Middleton.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With a forecast for rain, we headed out to visit the horses early in the day.\u00a0 (David&#8217;s wife, Claire,\u00a0responded that\u00a0sometimes in rare momemnts,\u00a0\u00a0David does something smart.)<\/p>\n<p>First, we had the opportunity to photograph the younger horse, Reva, running.\u00a0 Being cooped up in the barn all morning, Reva welcomed the oppotunity to run around.\u00a0 Then, after a expending some energy, was more accepting of standing around for some portraiture.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Davis11_6739.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-159 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Davis11_6739-300x208.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"208\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Davis11_6739-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Davis11_6739.jpg 862w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The technique of photographing a moving horse is theoretically similar to photographing a person running or riding a bicyle.\u00a0 A perfectly sharp image requires a high shutter speed, but this is perhaps not the best idea because\u00a0the photo\u00a0fails to communicate motion.\u00a0 Instead, we were shooting around\u00a01\/100 second and then following the horse&#8217;s movement by panning the camera.\u00a0 With a bit of practice and a bit of luck, you can get a sharp image of the horse, but the feet show motion blur.<\/p>\n<p>Simple right?\u00a0 Well, maybe not.\u00a0\u00a0In reality, an animal&#8217;s movements are\u00a0unpredictable, making unexpected turns, stops, &amp; starts.\u00a0 So there is a bit of &#8220;spray and pray&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0 Set the camera to take multiple photos in quick succession, press the shutter button for a few seconds, capturing numerous images, &#8230; and pray a few of them look good.\u00a0\u00a0 This is necessary particularly because the feet are constantly changing position and the most aesthetic position cannot be predicted.\u00a0\u00a0Don&#8217;t think that it is simply dumb luck; it&#8217;s not.\u00a0 As a photographer, you have to pay close attention to everything &#8230; but the position of the feet &#8230; that is mostly luck.<\/p>\n<p>Then we practiced some of Lisa Cueman&#8217;s equine portrait techniques.\u00a0 My image included here below\u00a0is clearly inspired by one of Lisa&#8217;s images.\u00a0\u00a0This angle of view is a bit counterintuitive, but\u00a0the aesthetic forms of the horse from different angles like this\u00a0is really eye-opening.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Davis11_68611.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-163 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Davis11_68611-185x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"185\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Davis11_68611-185x300.jpg 185w, https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/Davis11_68611.jpg 463w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 185px) 100vw, 185px\" \/><\/a>For a larger view, click on an image.<\/p>\n<p>Lisa&#8217;s website is currently undergoing an update, so you may want to check it anew in July.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/lisacuemanphotography.com\/\">http:\/\/lisacuemanphotography.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Special thanks to David Middleton (and Claire Middleton) for providin this opportunity.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidmiddletonphoto.com\/\">http:\/\/www.davidmiddletonphoto.com\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A fun and\u00a0eye-opening day today photographing horses with Lisa Cueman and David Middleton.\u00a0 With a forecast for rain, we headed out to visit the horses early in the day.\u00a0 (David&#8217;s wife, Claire,\u00a0responded that\u00a0sometimes in rare momemnts,\u00a0\u00a0David does something smart.)
