{"id":1061,"date":"2017-05-14T03:09:56","date_gmt":"2017-05-14T03:09:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/?p=1061"},"modified":"2017-05-15T00:50:54","modified_gmt":"2017-05-15T00:50:54","slug":"tulips-at-boston-public-garden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/tulips-at-boston-public-garden\/","title":{"rendered":"Tulips at Boston Public Garden"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The tulips at Boston Public Garden. are an annual rite of spring.\u00a0 They are fun to photograph and I wanted to share some techniques with you.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/BPG-1320.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1062\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1062 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/BPG-1320.jpg\" alt=\"BPG-1320\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/BPG-1320.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/BPG-1320-340x227.jpg 340w, https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/BPG-1320-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This first image was shot at 7am on a Saturday morning.\u00a0 Early morning may be the only time when the garden isn&#8217;t swarming with people.\u00a0 To visually compress the distance, I used a 200mm lens.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/untitled-shoot-5273.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1063\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1063 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/untitled-shoot-5273.jpg\" alt=\"tulips-5273\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/untitled-shoot-5273.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/untitled-shoot-5273-340x227.jpg 340w, https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/untitled-shoot-5273-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This next image is different for several reasons.\u00a0 Of course, this is a closer view.\u00a0 Using a\u00a0100mm macro lens at an aperture of f\/7, the\u00a0depth of field is shallow.\u00a0 I chose to fill the frame with flowers and exclude the surrounding environment.\u00a0 Also note that the light is very different.\u00a0 I shot this image after 6pm with the evening sun directly shining on the flowers from the side.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/untitled-shoot-5282.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1064\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1064 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/untitled-shoot-5282.jpg\" alt=\"tulips-5282\" width=\"709\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/untitled-shoot-5282.jpg 709w, https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/untitled-shoot-5282-241x340.jpg 241w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 100vw, 709px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Getting even closer, the image becomes more abstract.\u00a0 The image is about color and texture; the concept of &#8220;tulip&#8221; begins to disappear.\u00a0 I specifically chose to use an evergreen shrub for the background, knowing it would fall away to black because this side of the shrub is in shadow.\u00a0 (You can dimly see a green tulip stem rising along the left side of the image.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/untitled-shoot-5287.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1065\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1065 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/untitled-shoot-5287.jpg\" alt=\"tulips-5287\" width=\"667\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/untitled-shoot-5287.jpg 667w, https:\/\/www.kevindavisphoto.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/untitled-shoot-5287-227x340.jpg 227w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 667px) 100vw, 667px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Taking a step back, not as close as the previous image, this is more obviously\u00a0a tulip.\u00a0 Still working with the dark background,\u00a0I&#8217;ve repositioned myself to achieve back-lighting from the setting sun.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, I chose to break a couple photography &#8220;rules&#8221;. Intentionally photographing through a foreground tulip creates a highlight in the bottom left.\u00a0 It was a gamble that I think paid off quite well.\u00a0 A viewer will naturally be drawn to the lower highlight and the upper highlight.
